Available for public purchase is a true museum quality historic U.S. Model 1842 .54 caliber percussion pistol, manufactured on contract for the Government by H. Aston & Co. of Middletown, Connecticut. These classic American large bore single shot weapons were made from 1846 to 1850 and saw wide usage on the frontier Pre-Civil War and later used in the Civil War itself. Most examples of the Model 1842 show a much-abused condition and no longer function with this example appearing to be complete showing a good metal colored silver-gray bright finish with original bright brass furniture and a fine walnut stock. The pistol shows an 8.5” round barrel, captive ramrod, and functions without flaw (a shooter). The lock plate is correctly marked, “US H. ASTON” IN THE FRONT OF THE HAMMER AND “MIDDtn/ CONN. 1850” behind the hammer all on the lock plate. The pistol is marked 1851 at the tail along with the accompanying soft worn inspector marks presumably the correct “NWP” over “P” and the “H”. The piece also shows the added initials of “DS”. Two cartouches on counterpane are visible. Truly a fine early example of a Pre-Civil War and later use in the Civil War U.S. Government Issue large bore pistol. Antique Firearm Pre-1898, requires NO FFL.
