U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine
This carbine features the improved buckhorn rear sight with the "C" and base markings moved from the right to the left side of the sight, low arch breechblock, and "U" stamped barrel band with no provisions for a stacking swivel. The three click tumbler lock plate is marked with the eagle/shield motif followed by "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD/ 1873". The casehardened breechblock is stamped "U.S. / MODEL/ 1873". The left side of the barrel is marked "V/P/Eagle Head/P" parallel to the bore just ahead of the receiver. The receiver has a five pointed star following the serial number that correctly falls into the Model 1879 serial number range (100,000-280,000). The significance of the star mark has not been definitely determined, but it has been speculated that this is an example of a carbine that was repaired and re-issued with a replacement receiver refurbished to new condition by Springfield Armory. The buttstock has a "US" marked buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod included), a clear script "SWP / 1882" cartouche on the left side, a circled "P" behind the trigger guard, and a saddle ring bar with ring mounted on the left side.
