Springfield Model 1870, .50-70 cal. Trapdoor rifle, 32" barrel, brown patina finish, cartouched wood stock, lock dated 1863 on rear. The metal surfaces show a dark brown patina with light to slightly heavy scattered erosion and surface pitting, the heavier pitting on the muzzle. The original ramrod is retained and is aged and pitted to match. The stock shows 2 good cartouches, some small losses along the cleaning rod channel,good markings on breech and lock; original rear sight retained, action good, bore fair to good. These frontier-used arms were the first cartridge arms used against Indians during the Wagon Box Fight in Wyoming, andthe Government supplied them for a few dollars with free ammo to the buffalo hunters.
