Included in this lot for bidding is a Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle, otherwise known as the "Ram Rod Bayonet Model". The Model 1888 Ramrod Bayonet rifle was derived from the experimental Model 1884, of which 1,003 examples were manufactured for field trial. Though the Mod 1884 was generally satisfactory, three additional prototype ramrod bayonet rifles were produced during the fiscal year of 1888, incorporating small improvements not found on the 1884. Ultimately, production on the finished Model 1888 was begun in the fiscal year of 1889, and ended in 1893, in which 64,822 examples were made. This example in particular shows the inspection stamp "SWP - 1891" on the walnut stock, indicating it was inspected in that year, by Samuel W. Porter. This rifle utilizes the 3rd variation "Round Rod Bayonet", showing the double-locking shoulders to engage the locking mechanism. Additionally, the rifle shows the trapdoor butt-plate, a correct adjustable "Rifle" marked rear leaf sight, correct double stacking sling-swivels, and a one piece guard assembly. The rifle is marked in numerous places, reading; "U. S. Springfield" on the side-plate, showing the eagle stamp, "SWP - 1891" on the left side of the stock, above the trigger, "US" on the top of the butt-plate, "US - Model 1884" on the top of the breech block, serial number "111830" on top of the receiver, and showing multiple inspector marks on the barrel, and stock bands. Overall, the rifle shows very-good, original condition. The firearm doesn't show any signs of re-finishing or sanding to the walnut fixtures, and boasts good original blue, absent of over-cleaning or abuse. The rifle additionally has good mechanical condition, with a tight action, and a great bore, showing strong rifling. This rifle qualifies as an Antique Long Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 111830.
