This lot features a Scarce Winchester Model 1890 .22 WRF Rifle. In the late 1880s, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company asked John Browning to design a replacement for the Model 1873 rifle, since the rim fire version of the Model 1873 had never achieved any great popularity. On June 26, 1888, a patent for the new design was issued to John and Matthew Browning. Under this patent, Winchester created the second repeating slide action .22 rifle ever successfully developed and manufactured, being narrowly edged out by the Colt Lightning small frame carbine. The Model 1890 proved to be the most successful repeating rim fire rifle for general all around shooting ever made by Winchester. Approximately 849,000 Model 1890 rifles were produced between 1890 and 1932, after which the Model 1890 was replaced by the Winchester Model 62 rifle. This rifle has been professionally and expensively restored, it now displays a beautiful finished appearance. The barrel, magazine tube and receiver show a rich Winchester blue finish that was expertly and painstakingly applied leaving all the barrel markings and early style upper tang markings clear and sharp. As a correct restoration, the hammer and trigger were not blue finished, but left in their correct original case hardened state- this is one difference between a re-blued firearm and a correctly restored one. Excellent forearm has not been refinished or sanded and the butt stock also has been left in its original state. The action works perfectly and the metal on this rifle now appears as it did when it left the Winchester factory 124 years ago. Antique (pre-1899) Winchester Model 1890s are very scarce and those that have survived to the present are often in poor states of condition due to constant use with inexpensive rim fire ammunition. The .22 WRF is one of the more difficult to find caliber and very popular with collectors today. This rifle was manufactured in 1894. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 30661.
