Offered for sale is a Very Rare Colt Model 1877 Thunderer .41 Caliber Centrefire Double Action Revolver. This revolver shows the very scarce and desirable 6” barrel with ejector. This same revolver in the more common smaller .38 Colt caliber was referred to as the “Lightning” and is found more commonly than the big .41 Colt model. Most of the 1877s were made with shorter barrels and without the ejector mounted on the side of the barrel like on the famed Colt Single Action Army Revolver. The more common ejector less models were for pocket carry while these long barreled ejector models were considered serious belt or holster guns. The M1877 was designed by one of the inventors of the M1873 Colt Single Action Army, William Mason, as Colt's first attempt at manufacturing a double-action revolver. The M1877 was the first successful US-made double-action cartridge revolver. The "Lightning" was the favored personal weapon of famous Manchester (UK) Victorian detective and then head of CID, Jerome Caminada. Old West outlaw John Wesley Hardin frequently used both "Lightning" and "Thunderer" versions of the Colt 1877 revolver. Likewise the 1877 "Thunderer" in .41 caliber was the preferred weapon of Billy the Kid and was his weapon of choice when he was killed by Pat Garrett in 1881. This early example made during the Frontier Years is in surprisingly excellent condition with beautiful blue remaining on the barrel and cylinder and still retains excellent and sharp three line patent dates of Sept. 19, 1871; Sept. 15, 1874 and Jan. 19, 1875 as well as the correct small “41 CAL” on the left rear side of the trigger guard. The top of the barrel is also correctly and clearly stamped “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co.” over “HARTFORD, CT U.S.A.” Retains the original unaltered front sight, beautiful screws and excellent mechanics- this is very unusual as most examples of this desirable Colt Six Shooter have internal mechanisms that no longer function properly. Fine checkered hard rubber grips with the famed “Rampant Colt” in an oval embossed at the top. Especially scarce and desirable with blue finish as most were nickel plated. This revolver was manufactured in 1888. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 70664.
