Meacham type conversion of Civil War carbine to .45-70 caliber rifle, 28” medium weight octagon barrel, 43”overall. Hide wrapped, stitched stock that appears to be tanned in Indian motif. Forend period replaced andmeasuring 16-1/4”. Brown patina finish with some surface erosion and pitting. Barrel is unmarked. Old tag attached. Serial #47251 on tag and beneath barrel. Old tag states the provenance as being obtained from Mescalerofamily, who lived on an Apache reservation and they operated a Billy the Kid museum and gas station in the 1930’s at Mesilla, NM until the beginning of World War II. The tag also shows the progression the rifle thentook from dealer to collector's. The gun is in good frontier used condition, traces of original finish, some erosion and pinprick pitting. Good markings on lock, some scaling on barrel. Stock has darkened and shows somedings, mars, hard frontier use with large breaks around the tang and area where repaired. The repair dates to the 19th century and is very attractive. Est: $2,500 - $5,000
