This is an interesting and important Lakota Sioux Native American Indian carved wood flute with beaded drop and quillwork dating to circa 1880-1900’s. The pipe was reviewed and found to be an authentic 19th Century Sioux flute by one of the most important Native American Indian collectors in Billings, Montana. The pipe is carved of solid wood showing a graduated smoking tip having the correct darkened patina, a sign of age and use, and the original bird shaped block on the nest with drilled finger holes. The mouthpiece is accented by an early green mother of pearl round piece with tanned hide fringe with two square faceted Czechoslovakia blue trade bead. The piece shows a lead wrap at the nest with a sinew wrap and extremely fine porcupine quilled accent in a mineral polychrome dye. The flute also shows three patriotic banner wraps. The end of the pipe has an exceptional Indian tanned hide construction with glass trade seed beaded drop that is original to the piece. The drop shows the finest small rolled tin jingle cones flanked by chalk white pony trade beads and one large rolled tin jingle cone with a tuft of horse or human hair. The drop also shows six big wampum cowry shells. The piece is from a historic large Native American Indian and Old West collection from Billings, Montana. Early Sioux original authentic flutes from the 19th Century are very uncommon and rarely come up for public sale. Overall in very good condition for its age showing the correct patina. Measures 21.25”L with a 13”L beaded drop with fringe.
