Half-stock percussion plains rifle, barrel signed in inlaid plaque “D. Weller”. Approx. .40 caliber, 40-1/2” barrel, 55” overall, medium to light weight, double-set trigger, half-stocked, German silver inlay with someinlays missing. Some replaced with wood. Fair condition showing frontier use, damages, repairs, general carry and use. With unusual hinged patchbox engraved with a fish and an odd inlay which may represent Jacob’s ladderor the steps to heaven. Includes an old note hand written in pencil stating, ‘Edwin Cox bought this muzzle loading rifle from an old negro named Ed Biggs whose age about 75 years old who use it’. The balance of the letteris difficult to read, but mentions helping ‘the Boons travel down ms river to St. Louis’ and the dates ‘about 1815-1825’, which is probably the birth-date of Biggs, indicating the note is written approx. 1900 or before.Edmund Cox is believed to be a settler and pioneer of a settlement near Cooper’s Fort, Missouri, and the rifle is believed to have been given to Biggs by Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone.
