This lot offers an early grand tour souvenir, bronze statue of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius on horseback. The bronze sits on a large marble plinth, composed of three solid, carved chunks of white marble. The statue is made after the original equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, which is now on display in the Palazzo dei Conservatori of the Musei Capitolini in Rome. The original was erected in 175 AD, and is one of the only surviving monumental statues of a Roman emperor. The statue originates from the early 1800's and is believed to be an "Italian Grand Tour" Souvenir - The Grand Tour was a sort of pilgrimage, or right of passage for young, affluent & scholarly Europeans. They would travel the European continent in order to gain knowledge and experience. The gorgeous plinth is marked on the bottom "Made in Italy". The piece is in good condition for the age, the bronze statue is somewhat loose from its base, and the marble plinth shows some chipping on the edges. The sculpture measures 12 1/2" wide, 7 1/4" deep, and 21 1/2" tall.
