Geode Vessel | Joshua Salesin, California
Black agate wood | 5 x 5 x 5 in/13 x 13 x 13 cm

The theme of 'Traditional Form Revisited' spurred me to reexamine pieces I had previously begun but left unfinished. I made this vessel from a rough-turned bowl I started thirteen years ago and set aside due to imperfections in the wood. On revisiting the piece, I realized I could turn the bowl on its side and create a new form using the Geode Vessel designs I am currently exploring.
The piece is hand-turned (not CNC) using a rosette lathe. The exterior features the beautiful wood grain while the internal pattern is suggestive of the crystalline forms which occasionally produce spectacular geodes.

About the artist:
Using ethically-sourced wood and a 180-year old ornamental lathe, Salesin combines traditional turning techniques that date back hundreds of years with unique, engaging and beautiful contemporary designs. His work is in a number of public and private collections, including those of the Peabody Essex Museum, The Yale University Art Gallery, and the Center for Art in Wood.
