Oval period photograph of 40 breech loading Civil War carbines manufactured by various makers in a 30 1/4" x 26 1/4" wooden frame. The Manufacturers name is on the outer rim and the center reads "Breech Loading/CARBINES,/submitted by INVENTORS to a BOARD of OFFICERS convened/by order of the/Secretary of War at the National Armory/SPRINGFIELD, MASS. U.S.A./on the Fourth of January 1865". The hardwood frame is varnished with a raised floral carved and gold painted trim and is glass covered. Good with some crazing of the varnish and a small crack on the lower right hand corner.
