This lot features a Superb Factory Engraved and Ivory Gripped Colt Open Top .22 Caliber Revolver. The Colt Open Top Pocket Model Revolver was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1871. Introduced a year before the Colt Open Top (a model from 1872) and two years before the Colt Peacemaker and the Colt New Line(both introduced in 1873), the Colt Open Top Pocket Model Revolver was, alongside the Colt House Revolver, one of the two first metallic cartridge rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt's. It also was one of the first pocket metallic cartridge revolvers made by the company. Several similarly engraved Open Top Colts are depicted on pages 270-272 in the classic reference book COLT ENGRAVING by R. L. Wilson and are attributed to Colt’s main engraver from 1871-1921,Cuno A. Helfricht. This engraved pocket revolver is more ornate than many in that it has engraving on the frame, back strap, cylinder and both barrel sides. It also has factory ivory grips that are in superb condition with no chips, cracks or splits. Matching serial numbers on the frame and 2 3/8” barrel, markings include “22 CAL” on the left side of the frame and the correct two line Colt name and address on the barrel top, all engraving remains distinct and clear. Fine mechanics and screws with original front sight intact. This revolver was manufactured in 1874. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 25566.
