The lot features an excellent painted parfleche sheath with trade knife from the Crow Native American Indians and dating to circa 1880-1900's. The piece shows a Buffalo Indian tanned hide parfleche rawhide construction with an extraordinary pigment mineral painted traditional geometric design in yellow, red, blue, and green. The sheath shows a large desirable size with Indian tanned hide sewn construction. The knife featured with the lot is an early large frontiers cooking trade knife with an unmarked blade and yellowed aged bone handle having a poured pewter hilt. The knife is a later addition to the set, but compliments well. The piece is pictured in the renowned book by John Baldwin, "Early Knives and Beaded Sheaths of the American Frontier" on page 73. Provenance: From a historic Native American artifact and weapon collection in Clearmont, Wyoming and from the Ex-collections of Jerry Lee and Bill Glass. This is truly a wonderful well documented authentic parflech sheath showing fine original museum quality condition. The piece comes with a Historic Artifact Information sheet, similar to a Certificate of Authenticity, that is signed and sealed. The certificate is from Jeb Taylor and Plains Indian Artifacts, the renowned artifact collector and authenticator. The sheath measures 3.75" x 13.5". The knife measures 12.5" long. A few excellent examples of Parfleche Sheaths have sold at public auction such as the Crow Sheath that sold at the August in Santa Fe High Noon & Manitou Galleries 8/11/2005 sale for $3,042 and the Crow Sheath sold by Heritage Auctions at their 12/13/2016 sale for $1,750, with the example being sold in this lot being of a much more attractive and document rarity.
