Available for public purchase is this very rare Early Civil War Starr Arms Co. Double Action Model 1858 .44 Caliber Percussion Army Revolver. The revolver features a 6” round barrel, 6 shot round un-fluted cylinder, and a one-piece walnut grips with very rare partially visible military cartouche. The revolver is one of approximately 23,000 of this model that were produced with the serial number starting at 1 through 23,000. This is an uncommon late production pistol of this model most likely manufacture with the very intent of being issued as a martial firearm for the Civil War. The serial number is stamped clearly on the side of the cylinder, the frame (under the hammer) and on the barrel assembly (on both by the frame). The walnut grip sides show the government inspector’s cartouche with most of these often being worn away from handling and use. These early revolvers found great favor and popularity for their large caliber and the double action function that both cocks the hammer, rotates the cylinder, and fires the revolver all in one motion from pulling the trigger. Many of these early historic firearms saw use with the Union Forces until capture and then use of the Southern Confederate States side of the Civil War. Most found their way to the Western frontier after the war. Left side of the frame marked “STARR ARMS Co. NEW YORK.” Right side of the frame also clearly marked “STARR’S PATENT JAN. 15, 1856.” The firearm shows a good condition for its age with much of the blue finish being retained 50-70%. The grips show a chip at the base, but are original. The mechanics are in good functioning condition, original front sight. The piece was manufactured from circa 1850’s to 1860’s. Antique Firearm Pre-1898, NO FFL required. Serial Number of 22712 (one of the last 300 ever created).
