The lot features an original Cheyenne Native American Indian fully beaded Umbilical Cord Turtle Fetish dating to the 19th Century. These umbilical cord fetishes are very scarce in original form. The beaded design is typical of Cheyenne colors and stylings of the period, including the common blue-bordered block / bar design seen in Cheyenne beadwork. The beadwork is all glass trade seed beads in chalk white, medium blue, Cheyenne pink, semi-transparent sky padre blue, and a single semi-transparent green bead. The turtle is beaded on rawhide parfleche leather with four fringed feet. The piece measures overall 5 1/2 inches in length from the tip of the head/mouth to the top of the tail. In the realm of Plains Indian beadwork, Cheyenne beaded fetishes are very rare.
