This is a leather sheath with brass trade tack design from the North Plains Blackfoot (Blackfeet) Native American Indians and dating to circa 1870-1880's. The piece shows a harness saddle commercial leather hide construction secured with iron-shanked brass trade tacks and brads in a traditional design. The knife, which is original to the sheath, shows a dag pattern with double edged iron blade secured to a carved wood handle with one large iron rivet. Above the iron rivet is a smaller copper river which is a very early repair for the crack at the hilt. The end of the knife shows a wide rounded pommel and one piece grips shows a nice mellow original patina throughout. Provenance: From a large historic Native American artifact and weapons collection in Clearmont, Wyoming. The piece comes with a Historic Artifact Information sheet, similar to a Certificate of Authenticity, that is signed and sealed. The certificate is from Jeb Taylor and Plains Indian Artifacts, the renowned artifact collector and authenticator. The sheath measures 2.75" x 10.75". The knife measures 11.75" long.
