Rare and interesting special ordered 1873 deluxe 1st Model rifle, S/N 8957 with a 28” extra-long round barrel, full mag, set trigger, XXXX deluxe checkered stock, beach sights, case hardened, stabler, received in warehouse Sept. 15, 1875, shipped Sept 21, 1875 to order # 3722. The stock is mounted with a gold plaque inscribed “Presented to Edward Stabler, by Winchester Arms Co.”. The belly of the stock has gold framed small compass inlaid. NOTE: The ledger shows “Stabler” and the next line “Compass in stock” in the line for successive numeral. (Just recording error dropping line). This rifle remains in very good plus condition with 60%-80% original toning blue finish. 30%-50% case colors turning silver gray. The stocks are very good also with beautiful 4x grain and strong checkering at the wrist. Minor scratches, mars and normal imperfections. Good markings, good action, shiny bore and period swivels. The sights have been changed to standard type with unusual non-Winchester high quality early tang sight possibly 1 of a kind. Also the barrel shows small tap screw and milled groove behind the sight for early full length scope or tube. Note: The address is placed near the breach and the front sight is further forward. Edward Stabler is best known for the Stabler cut off on Spencer rifles but designed and fabricated other improvements for firearms in general and may have had a relationship to Winchester which should be further researched. A unique and early 1873 deluxe. (Antique) Est.: $14,000-$28,000
